Located along the Potomac River in northern Virginia, Great Falls Park blends spectacular scenery with fascinating history. Walk about one mile along the mostly flat Patowmack Canal Trail to explore canal remnants, learn how it was constructed, and discover its connection to the later C&O Canal. Hear the remarkable story of Captain George Pointer, who began working there while enslaved, purchased his freedom, became a ship captain, and later supervised canal operations. Along the way, explore how the Potomac shaped local commerce, geology, and settlement. Whether you come for river views or stories of the past, Great Falls offers an inspiring place where nature and history meet. |
