ASQ 0511 - Message from the Chair

Message from the Chair July 2014

Melissa C. Butler, Chair

This is a very exciting time for ASQ section 0511. This September is the 30th anniversary of the founding of our section and we are planning a special meeting to celebrate the occasion which will include a look back at our section's history and accomplishments and a panel discussion focusing on Business Trends in Quality, Today's ROI/Cost of Quality, and Reaching the Next Generation of Quality Professionals. The meeting will be held on Sept. 11 at Maggiano's in Tyson's Corner.

As the new Chair of the section, I would like to take a little time to introduce myself. I have been attending 0511 section meeting s since 2008 and in that time I have earned a CMQ/OE certification, learned about many other areas of quality that I would have not otherwise been exposed to, and met some extraordinary people, many of whom are current ly serving on our board!

I had been attending our monthly meetings and listening in on the board on a regular basis when our current past chair, Jeff Parnes asked me if I would be interested in joining the board as Chair-Elect. In the past, I had thought about it, but didn't really know what all would be involved. Jeff assured me that he and the other members of the board would teach me what I would need to know and that it would be a great experience. In the past year as Chair-Elect, I've learned a tremendous amount, learned more about how ASQ operates and how it can benefit our members, and had a great time getting to know the members of the board. Overall, my time so far has been extremely beneficial to me both professionally and personally and I encourage you all to speak to any of our board members to find out how you can be more involved in our section.

There are many ways you can great ways to become more involved and earn certification credits: by bringing someone new to one of our social meetings, proctoring at a certification exam, volunteering to speak at a meeting or teach a class, or joining the board. My membership in our section has been a great experience both personally and professionally and I encourage everyone to volunteer to play a more active role in the section.
